about

Colin Black composed 118, 120, 122 while he was undertaking his BA and going through quite a minimalist phase. In Black's program notes, he calculated that the composition would take 4 hours and 17 minutes to complete all the possible note/pattern combinations, during which time an intricate pattern of identical complex cross-rhythms would repeat every 30 seconds.

When Black handed the assignment in, his lecture’s feedback included the following: "This piece ... is remarkable for its cunning construction. The basic melodic ideas are put together so as to create a constantly evolving texture when the 3-part phasing occurs. Although the ideas are simple the piece never becomes boring. The overall effect is delightfully trancifying” - Prof. Michael Hannan.

Later 118, 120, 122 won the North Coast Entertainment Industry Association (NCEIA) Dolphin Award for Best Experimental Song, premiered at one of the Live Wires concerts (held at the University of Sydney), was broadcast on AudioDaze, 2SER-FM (Sydney) & Difficult Listening, RTR FM (Perth) and was exhibited at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane as part of the National Digital Art Awards Finalists Exhibition.

This is the original version created using a Mac Plus (8 MHz CPU, 4 MB RAM) running Pro 4 software triggering a Roland U-220, that was synced using SMPTE to a Fostex (250 model) cassette 4-track machine and then mixed down to stereo cassette. NB the fade at the end was done manually on the Fostex built-in mixer.
